Training

Traineeship & Apprenticeship

The Sage Gateshead has been running their acclaimed trainee and apprenticeship scheme for four years.

For this scheme, Hands On Rhythm has mentored three trainees and one apprentice. The traineeship runs for six months and the apprenticeship runs for 12 months. Our last mentee completed both the traineeship and apprenticeship.

The trainees and apprentice were directly responsible to Hands On Rhythm and overall supervision was by Head Of community Development at The Sage Gateshead.

The trainees and apprentice took part in the following:

Training and development sessions run by Hands On Rhythm
They observed us at work running sessions
They observed how we interact with young people
Mentoring sessions with Therese Johnston
They led music activities under supervision
They learned basic drumming skills
Learned how to play as part of an ensemble

The trainees and apprentice’s training took place within our Boom Dang teaching sessions and rehearsals. An apprentice has since gone on to start their own drumming band.

Studentship

Our studentship training aims are:

To provide an encouraging environment where young people can try out their leadership skills in a relaxed and supported atmosphere
To encourage personal and professional development amongst our students
To promote teamwork and provide a supported network of young teachers
To make each student feel valued
To help our students maximise the use of their skills

Hands On Rhythm and Altar Native have collaborated to devise a structure of training for 15 – 17 year olds. This training is to enable young people the necessary skills to apply for a traineeship with The Sage Gateshead when they are 18. Training includes:

Learning how to run a basic percussion session
Learning how to run a basic singing session
Devising new material
Devising a short workshop
Running a warm-up session

Hands On Rhythm are currently training young people from Boom Dang The Band to become community music leaders.

The young people are gaining hands on experience in the workplace within the schools work that we do and in rehearsals for our beginner Boom Dang bands and other teaching scenarios.
